The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.
Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.
Competitors will gain the ability to contest specific decisions made by the official, mirroring the system currently in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
The new system will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.
This step follows just a year after the AELTC rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line judges.
Reviewable Decisions
Players cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine other decisions, such as:
- If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
- Possible hindrance end of a rally.
Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the number of reviews a competitor can initiate.
Case in Point
A recent case took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.
The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.
Growing Trend
Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its events.
Further Updates
A further change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses instances where fans have occasionally been unsure if a shot was out or in.
In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
