A recent study reveals that patients who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a leading medical journal shows that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals using such medications should be aware of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the medication ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain suggests a return to starting mass in about a year and a half.
Weighing Approaches
The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
The team point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually see a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Understanding the Quick Rebound
Doctors propose the mechanism of the injections accounts for the amplified regain.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than normal might result in the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Disease?
Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals argue that, given the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often life-long.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Testimonies
Users who have discontinued the medication explain a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if something that goes on and you're instantly starving," said a patient.
This challenge is compounded if users have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Significant Interest
Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Use is higher among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss hinges on combined behavioural changes.
