UN:Me: An Cerebral Thriller Merging Survival Horror and Social Deduction Mechanics
The recent Day of the Devs online presentation revealed several intriguing future games, but one in particular has seized attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience appears to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.
"It's a unique game where a young woman containing several personalities inside her needs to flee from a maze of the psyche," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Shattered Consciousness
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of teenage years. Within her reside four distinct personas, all possessing their own fears and drives. These souls can seize control at will, unleashing their deep-seated phobias upon her suddenly.
Judging by revealed footage, much of the action takes place within a eerie hospital, though other scenes show the protagonist navigating a desolate church.
A World of Individual Dread
"What are you fearful of? What causes you uncomfortable?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. People in power. Elements that appear minor to others can activate a deep instinct within us. This game explores that concept — anxieties that are specific to each person."
The central gameplay loop involves controlling whichever soul surfaces at any given time. However, these souls will change involuntarily as you play. While exploring, each soul's fears become amplified and attack the protagonist one after another. When the soul changes, so does the specific fear the player experiences.
Unsettling Visuals and a Deadly Choice
Initially, UN:Me displays noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is filled with orderlies all sporting the identical visage, with unnervingly wide smiles. Patients in the lobby have large flowers growing from their heads are. Flowers are an ever-present element, contrasting organic elegance with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular twist. Players must determine which of the four souls inhabiting the heroine is the "true" one. "Each of the personas asserts that the physical form is rightfully them," explains a developer. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is authentic."
After a player have deduced a persona is fake, they must eliminate it. However, because every entity can lie or obfuscate the truth, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.
"Maybe you've already eliminated the real [soul] by your own actions," a voice suggests. "The last one remaining could be a fraud. In any case, your choices are final."
UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced launch window, but it is available to follow on platforms.
