Entrepreneur Jared Isaacman has been confirmed as the incoming leader of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, concluding an unusual confirmation journey where the President nominated him, pulled the nomination, and then submitted his name once more.

The billionaire, an amateur jet pilot who became the first civilian to perform a spacewalk, is also the first NASA administrator in a generation to come entirely from outside government.

For numerous observers, the success of his leadership will be judged on one pivotal challenge: whether it can return humans to the Moon in advance of China.

The President has made clear a goal for the America to establish a permanent lunar base, both to enable resource extraction and to serve as a stepping stone for journeys to the Red Planet.

Senate Vote and Background

On Wednesday, the U.S. Senate confirmed his appointment with a bipartisan vote.

The President initially pulled the nomination in May, pointing to a "comprehensive examination of previous relationships".

At the time, the president was publicly feuding with the SpaceX CEO, one of his largest political donors, with whom Isaacman has a working relationship.

Isaacman says he is now completely supportive of the presidential objective to extract lunar resources, putting him at odds with Elon Musk, who has said that lunar missions is a distraction from the goal of reaching Mars.

Strategic Plan

In the ongoing cosmic competition, world powers are vying to tap into the Moon.

“This is not the time for delay but a time for progress because if we lag, if we stumble, we may not recover, and the results could change the strategic equilibrium here on Earth,” he told the Senate committee during his hearing.

The business leader sees introducing more industry players as crucial for meeting those goals, according to a recently leaked memo detailing his vision for NASA.

In his testimony, he reaffirmed the plan, which he crafted when he was first nominated, but said it was a developing document.

His openness to competition could also create a conflict with SpaceX. Last week, Isaacman applauded the award of a significant agreement to Blue Origin, which is one of the few rivals of SpaceX.

In the strategy paper, he suggested NASA should increasingly partner with universities and academic institutions, casting the agency as a "amplifier for science".

He pointed to the upcoming 2027 launch of the Roman Space Telescope as a cornerstone project.

"And if we be close to something groundbreaking - like launching Roman - I will leave no stone unturned to see it launched, even funding it myself if that's what it requires to achieve the scientific results," he remarked.

Personal Fortune

According to analyses, his wealth is valued at around $1.2 billion, accumulated through his payment processing company and the sale of his firm that trained pilots and managed a private fleet of military jets.

The top job at NASA will be his maiden role in public office, a contrast to the immediate predecessors appointed as NASA chief.

He will take over from Sean Duffy, who has acted as interim NASA chief since July.
