Toronto Blue Jays Claim World Series Matchup Against defending champion Dodgers

George Springer celebrating

The outfielder contributed to the Astros securing the championship in 2017.

Toronto's Blue Jays advanced to their first Fall Classic since 1993 by beating the Mariners in the seventh Game 7 of the AL Championship Series.

Trailing by two runs, Springer smashed a three-run blast in the seventh inning, propelling the sole Canadian team in MLB to a 4-3 win in the seven-game series. Next up are the defending champions, the team that is the defending champions, in the anticipated Fall Classic.

"I'm thrilled for our team, the city, Canada," Springer stated, a key player of the Astros team that secured the 2017 title. "It's truly an unbelievable moment."

Springer has now slugged 23 October home runs, placing him third in history behind Ramirez (twenty-nine) and Jose Altuve (27).

"It's hard to imagine another player on planet Earth that I'd prefer in that situation besides Springer with his post-season brilliance," said manager John Schneider.

Seattle, despite leading the series two games to none and three games to two, are still the sole team never to appear in a championship series.

Mariners manager Dan Wilson said "there's no question that it hurts" after his team's loss at Toronto's Rogers Centre, but commended their work this season.

"It's a special team. Sadly that we had to come out on the wrong side of this one," he remarked.

The Blue Jays won the World Series on each of their earlier trips in 1992 and '93, and are set to host the Los Angeles in the opener on Friday.
