New York's next mayor confirms plans to live in historic Gracie Mansion

NYC's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to live in the historic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the rent-stabilised apartment that sparked debate in his election bid.

A Historic Residence

Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the official residence for the majority of New York City mayors after the mid-20th century.

But, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a central policy, hesitated to declare he would live there promptly following his electoral win in November.

"My choice came down to our family's safety and the need to focusing my full attention on enacting the platform on affordability the city's residents supported," stated Mamdani in a statement.

Thanking a Neighborhood

His home was in the Astoria neighbourhood, a community renowned for its vibrant immigrant populations and international dining.

"To my neighbors in Astoria: thank you for showing us the best of New York City," he noted.

"Even though I'm moving there, Astoria will continue to reside inside me and the work I do," he said.

Political Debate

In his race for mayor, Mamdani connected his central policy – to freeze the rent – to his own housing situation.

Yet his rivals, including ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for occupying the apartment despite the fact that he hails from a famous family.

Not All Mayors Stayed

Not all mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, kept his residence in his private home on Manhattan's Upper East Side throughout his time in office, which ended in 2012.

In his view, Bloomberg argued it should be a venue for public city functions, and advocated for significant upgrades of the older mansion.

A Stately Residence

When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion sometime around his inauguration on 1 January, he will be surrounded by surroundings very different than his modest Astoria apartment.

Adorned in pale yellow exterior, forest green window covers, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home situated by the East River.

Inside, the first floor of the Federal-style mansion is appointed consistent with the home's historical period.

The estate, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also boasts increased security measures to safeguard the mayor and his family.

Supernatural Speculation

Some residents have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that they experienced doors opening and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards creaked eerily.

The departing mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "I don't care what people claim," he insisted in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."

The Value of Rent Stabilization

His former home is under rent control, meaning the city imposes caps on how much property owners can raise the rent each year.

Tenants see such units as valuable lifelines as the cost of housing rises faster than the means of many residents.

Records showed Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Based on data from real estate analysts Zillow, the average rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
