Information Available Regarding the Victims of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack
At least 16 people perished and over 40 were hurt when gunmen fired on a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack local authorities are describing as a act of terrorism.
As of the newest reports, authorities have announced the number of fatalities stands at 16, including one of the suspected attackers. Moreover, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to hospital.
The deceased have not yet been officially identified, but authorities state their ages span from 10 and 87 years of age.
Here are the individuals who are known to date.
Eli Schlanger
London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.
Reportedly a father-of-five, he served as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.
“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative remarked.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.
She described the moments before the attack, stating they were standing when the shooting started. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she stated.
The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.
In a statement, the Foreign Minister said that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the message continued.
One Child
A child who was taken to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, police have confirmed.
One Israeli Citizen
One victim from Israel was a fatality in the incident, as per reports citing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with a number in a critical state. The injured include two officers who responded to the attack.
A casualty is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the attackers. Called a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.
In a message, he described the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He said he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.
“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
