Gavin Newsom Acknowledges He Is Weighing a Presidential Campaign for 2028
Gavin Newsom, a prominent member of the Democratic party, has disclosed that he will make a decision about whether to seek the White House in 2028 once the 2026 congressional elections conclude.
"Absolutely, I would be lying if I denied it," the governor stated when pressed about contemplating a White House bid after the 2026 ballots. "It wouldn't be the truth. And I'm not."
The governor's tenure as California's leader wraps up in January 2027, and he cannot run again. Yet, he cautioned that any determination is not imminent.
"Fate will determine that," he remarked.
Increased Visibility as a Trump Critic
He has come to the forefront as a prominent opponent of the Trump administration, using his social media accounts and championing a ballot measure that would expand the party's House seats in response to redistricting by Republicans. This action has drawn criticism from adversaries.
Federal Funding Dispute
The former president's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, alleged that the governor shows no concern about the state's residents in a recent segment on Fox News. The secretary revealed intentions to withhold federal funds from the state and warned eliminating the authority to issue commercial driver's licenses.
"I'm about to pull a significant sum from California," he declared, after a recent tragic collision in California involving an undocumented semi truck driver that resulted in three deaths and four injuries.
His administration noted that the U.S. government had renewed the worker's status repeatedly, which permitted him to secure a CDL under U.S. law.
Duffy had previously announced he was withholding $40m from the state for not enforcing language proficiency rules for truck drivers.
Firm Rebuttal from the Administration
"One-time television figure, now transportation chief, still doesn't understand federal law," Newsom's office responded in a last month's comment countering Duffy's threats. "In the meantime, unlike this clown, we'll stick to the facts: California truck drivers had a accident mortality rate significantly lower than the national average. The state of Texas – the single state with a larger number of CDL holders – has a rate almost 50% higher than the state. Data speaks for itself. The Trump administration does."
Polling Data and Campaign Considerations
A recently conducted poll revealed that 72% of Democrats and 48% of all registered voters said that the governor ought to campaign for president in 2028. After the current administration began, Newsom's favorability has risen to an average of 33.5% from approximately 30%, while his unfavorability has fallen from an typical level of more than 40% to 38.4%.
Earlier this year, Newsom remarked while on a trip several key regions that he had "uncertainty" about his intentions for 2028.
He also referenced his past difficulties, including being identified as dyslexic at the young age of five.
"The thought that a individual who had modest test scores, who still struggles to read scripts, who was typically not at the front – that such a possibility is discussed is, by itself, amazing," he stated. "Who the hell knows? I await who emerges in 2028 and who meets that moment. And that's the question for the U.S. citizens."
