The US monetary authority lowered interest rates on midweek, representing the second rate cut in the current year during financial volatility stemming from the government closure and trade duties.
Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank
The decision to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Changes
In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release notes. “Inflation has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.
Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions
The Fed usually studies BLS data to determine labor market conditions, including the count of employment gains added to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in early September, before the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.
The number of positions created to the economy in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.
Alternative Reports Show Continued Decline
Though BLS was set to publish September’s employment data in early October, it halted its release when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, a trend he had previously attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase
Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are rising, although slowly. Prices rose three percent over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
